# Channel and Recess Bubbles

## When people refer to air trapped beneath a vinyl graphic, they often use the general term "bubble." In reality, several different types of bubbles and bubble-like defects can appear throughout the life of a graphic. While many may look similar, their causes, prevention methods, and corrective actions can differ significantly. Understanding these defects allows installers to diagnose problems more accurately, correct them more effectively, and improve long-term graphic performance.

Channel and recess bubbles develop in deep channels, body lines, corrugations, and other recessed areas where the film fails to maintain long-term contact with the surface.

These failures frequently appear days or weeks after installation.

**Common Causes**

- Insufficient post-heating
- Improper channel installation techniques
- Excessive film tension
- Bridging over recesses
- Stretching the material instead of conforming it

**Prevention**

- Use proper channel installation techniques
- Eliminate tension before post-heating
- Ensure the material is fully seated in recesses
- Follow recommended post-heating procedures

**Correction**

The affected area typically requires reheating, relaxation, reinstallation, and proper post-heating.
