Is overlaminate required?

Not always, but is highly recommended for printed graphics.

Benefits of using an overlaminate include:

  • UV protection: Helps slow down color fading caused by sunlight.

  • Abrasion resistance: Protects the printed surface from scratches and scuffing during handling, installation, or cleaning.

  • Moisture and chemical resistance: Provides additional protection against water, cleaners, and other contaminants.

  • Extended durability: Helps the graphic maintain its appearance and performance for a longer period.

  • Finish and texture options: Overlaminates are available in different finishes such as gloss, satin, or matte. Some are also available with different textures

  • Added stiffness and body: Overlaminates add structural support to the printed film, which can improve handling during installation. This is especially helpful for cast films and eco-solvent prints, where the ink may soften the film or make it feel more pliable. The laminate can make the graphic easier to position, squeegee, and install without stretching or distortion.

When an overlaminate may not be necessary:

  • Short-term promotional graphics

  • Indoor graphics with minimal contact

  • Temporary applications where durability is not a primary concern

While some applications can perform without an overlaminate, using one generally improves the durability, appearance, and overall lifespan of the printed graphic. For long-term or demanding environments, an overlaminate is considered best practice.
