Is DPF 6500 Compatible with Lexan® (Polycarbonate) Substrates?
The short answer is: Yes. The longer answer is: Proper outgassing of the substrate is required.
DPF 6500 is compatible with polycarbonate (Lexan®), acrylic, and modified acrylic substrates. However, when applying the film to polycarbonate, it is critical to allow the material to outgas before installation.
To ensure proper adhesion and prevent application issues, use one of the following methods:
- Remove the protective masking from the polycarbonate at least 3 days prior to film application, or
- Place the polycarbonate in a panel dryer for a minimum of 4 hours before application.
These steps allow trapped moisture within the polycarbonate to evaporate. If the substrate is not properly outgassed, bubbles may develop beneath the pressure-sensitive film after installation, especially when exposed to direct sunlight or elevated temperatures.
Polycarbonate can reabsorb moisture. Drain holes or breather vents can help moisture escape, while an air gap between the polycarbonate and the backing surface promotes ventilation and reduces moisture accumulation.
Additionally, if the graphic is produced using a solvent, eco-solvent, or UV-solvent printer, the printed vinyl should also be properly outgassed before lamination to avoid adhesive failure, bubbling, or other performance issues.
