Can you print on overlaminates?

Learn whether Arlon overlaminates can be printed, limitations, risks, and recommended alternatives for reliable performance.

All Arlon products that begin with Series are not designed for printing such as cut vinyl and over laminates. Arlon printable films are designated with DPF which stands for Digitally Printable Film.

So strictly speaking, overlaminates cannot be printed on. Arlon recommends DPF 4500G-Clear (calendered) or DPF 6000RP-Clear (cast) for a clear printable film.

Why is printing not recommended on overlaminates?

  1. The facestock of overlaminates is not treated to be receptive to ink. Therefore, the ink will not dry, penetrate, or adhere properly onto the facestock.
  2. The liners used for overlaminates are not designed to lay-flat, thus during digital printing, it may cause head strikes or worse, damage the printhead.
However, many have tried printing on overlaminates with acceptable results. Please note that printing on overlaminates are not warrantied.
