# Substrate Outgassing Bubbles

## When people refer to air trapped beneath a vinyl graphic, they often use the general term "bubble." In reality, several different types of bubbles and bubble-like defects can appear throughout the life of a graphic. While many may look similar, their causes, prevention methods, and corrective actions can differ significantly. Understanding these defects allows installers to diagnose problems more accurately, correct them more effectively, and improve long-term graphic performance.

Substrate outgassing bubbles occur when gases, moisture, or solvents trapped within a substrate escape after the graphic has been installed.

The released vapor becomes trapped beneath the film and forms bubbles.

**Common Examples**

- Polycarbonate (PC)
- Acrylic
- Composite materials
- Freshly painted surfaces

**Prevention**

- Follow substrate drying recommendations
- Pre-bake or condition substrates when appropriate
- Verify moisture content before installation
- Avoid applying graphics to uncured paint

**Correction**

The source of outgassing must be addressed before reinstalling the graphic. Simply removing the bubbles rarely solves the underlying problem.
