# What Causes Panel Misalignment During Installation?

## Why do multi-panel graphics sometimes fail to line up correctly?

### Introduction

Few installation issues are more frustrating than discovering that a graphic no longer aligns correctly after several panels have already been applied. Fortunately, most registration problems can be traced back to a handful of common causes.

### Improper Registration

The first panel establishes the direction of the entire installation.

If the first panel starts slightly out of level, every panel that follows will continue that same error. Over multiple panels, the image may gradually climb or drop across the surface.

### Film Stretching During Liner Removal

Some printable films utilize liners that release aggressively from the adhesive.

If the liner is pulled:

- Too quickly
- Too aggressively
- At an improper angle

the film can stretch before installation.

Even minor stretching can affect panel-to-panel registration and create visible image shifts.

### Excessive Repositioning

Repeatedly lifting and replacing a panel may slightly distort the film.

To reduce stretching:

- Position panels carefully before application
- Limit unnecessary repositioning
- Use registration marks instead of stretching material into place

### Insufficient Outgassing

Solvent and eco-solvent prints should be properly outgassed before lamination.

Residual solvents can:

- Continue escaping after installation
- Cause dimensional changes
- Increase shrinkage risk
- Make films easier to stretch during handling

### Installation Temperature

High installation temperatures make vinyl softer and easier to distort.

When material becomes more elastic, maintaining accurate registration becomes more difficult.

### Environmental Conditioning

Printed graphics should be allowed to acclimate to the installation environment.

Large differences between:

- Storage temperature
- Print room temperature
- Installation temperature

can cause expansion or contraction that affects alignment.
