# Why Won't My Vinyl Stick to Certain Surfaces?

## Low Energy Surfaces

### Why Won't My Vinyl Stick to Certain Surfaces?

Not all surfaces are equally easy to bond to.

Materials such as glass, metal, and painted automotive panels are considered high-energy surfaces. Adhesives typically bond very well to these substrates because they naturally allow the adhesive to spread and make contact.

Other materials are considered low-energy surfaces. Examples include wall paints, PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS plastics, and certain textured coatings. These surfaces can be more challenging because the adhesive may struggle to develop sufficient contact and build adhesion over time.

Walls deserve special attention. Most painted walls are considered low-energy surfaces, and modern paint technologies can further complicate adhesion. Features such as stain-resistant coatings, washable finishes, antimicrobial additives, low-VOC formulations, and paint-and-primer combinations can reduce surface energy and cause the paint to reject the adhesive. As a result, two walls with similar appearance may perform very differently.

For this reason, it is always recommended to perform an adhesion test before committing to a full installation. A small test graphic installed for several days can reveal potential compatibility issues and help avoid costly failures.

When working with difficult or low-energy surfaces, selecting the correct adhesive becomes critical. Products such as DPF 8200, DPF 8200X, and DPF 8000 are specifically designed with high-tack adhesive systems intended to improve adhesion on challenging substrates including low-energy plastics, certain painted surfaces, and other difficult-to-bond materials.

Many installation failures occur because a film designed for high-energy surfaces is applied to a low-energy substrate.

Before selecting a film, identify whether the surface is high or low energy. This will help determine whether a standard adhesive or a more aggressive adhesive system is required.

**Key takeaway:**
If adhesion is a concern, evaluate the surface characteristics and perform an adhesion test before changing the installation method or blaming the film. Low-energy surfaces often require specialized products such as DPF 8200, DPF 8200X, or DPF 8000 to achieve reliable long-term performance.
